    Hey Guys

I got a 8x which is stuck on spinning gears. It's the Verizon 8x

I tried to perform a factory reset by holding down the volume key when the phone is starting up - but instead of getting an exclamation mark screen after the HTC screen, the phone flashes the red charging LED after the HTC screen and then reboots and then goes into the gears screen again (if I don't keep the VOL down key pressed - if I do keep it pressed, it flashes the red LED after showing the HTC screen and reboots)

I kept it plugged in on the gears screen and left it overnight, hoping that maybe it would complete resetting, but no dice.

A thing I noticed is that the phone does not charge - the red LED does not come on when plugged in and even after leaving it plugged in for a long time, it goes dead within a few minutes when removed from the charger. Tried using different chargers and also tried charging it off my laptop.

After searching around, it seems there is no way to flash a fresh copy of the firmware like Nokia. Any ideas on how to revive it?

1.Press the Volume Down Key + Power Key to turn on the unit
    2. Still hold the volume down key, the release Power Key.
    3. Wait for the startup screen booting with an exclamation mark " ! " then release the volume down key.
4.Press the following buttons in the following order: press the volume up (high volume key) ==> press volume key down (low volume key) ==> press the power key ==> press volume down key.
5.Wait a moment and look at the screen, a message such as loading new software will start the hard reset process

Thanks for the reply mate! The problem is that I already tried this method to bring up the exclamation mark screen - but instead of showing the exclamation mark, it just flashes the red LED and then reboots itself.

I think the culprit is the battery as since the charging LED does not come on, the battery may be completely dead and the factory reset process might need some amount of battery to initialize

    A small progress here:
At moment when HTC logo appears I start to pressing UP, DOWN, POWER, DOWN (again and again) without holding any other key. Start screen appears but after few moments resets again.

Wow i just solved this problem. On using the developers preview failed to update and got stuck on the cog wheel screen. Trying to hard reset failed i didn't see no icon of a sort.

    1. Download a software called Windows Device Recovery
    2. Click on the "My Device was not Detected" button the select the model e.g mine was HTC 8x by AT&T.
    3. Put your phone into boot loader mode by holding the volume up and down at the same time when your phone vibrates before coming ON. You will see a screen with your IMEI number and more. Plug in your device.
    4. The software will read device info and you will need to answer some survey and download an update form your provider maybe AT&T or Verizon. The software does all that for you and the download speed will depend on connection speed.
    5. After download click on install and follow screen instructions. Your phone will be updated. This also solve the can't sign in problem for HTC 8x phones because the update comes with the updated Microsoft SSL certificate.

Doing all these will wipe the phone blank and every data in it but on restarting do well to connect to the internet maybe Microsoft has a backup of your data.
NOTE: *****Also, when the phone shows flashing on screen it may reboot and may not want to come ON just remove the phone without closing the program and put it in boot loader mode and connect again wait. Thanks
