Because "Full LTE" indicates hes running off of Verizon's towers...and in order to do that you need a sim card. I feel for this guy for having a bad experience with his phone. Windows Phone is not marketed at all so it's nice when people take a try and at it, but it stinks when the experience is sub par. What i dislike even more though are the people who may get lemons or who do not take every step available to ensure they get their device working properly before whining about it as the OP went about in the fashion he did. Same people who give 1 star reviews and SLAAAAM products before researching/returning the product.

How can you not have a sim card?

And if you have 8.1 installed, and you haven't done a HARD RESET after you installed it, that should be done asap. As far as restoring from the backup after reset, if I was you, I would not and just re-install my apps.

Why is a hard reset necessary? Though I don't have the Icon or any of the newer phones (I have the L720), I am running 8.1 (and all the subsequent updates including the most recent one) with no problems.

I have no sim card for my Icon. The WiFi issue was on 8.0 that's the reason I tried 8.1 , and gotten progressively worse on 8.1 update 1. I'm will try the soft reset and the latest update.
I strongly advice you to tweet to @nokia or nokia US about your problem.. They are the experts. .. And about the warranty, you lost it immediately at the moment you changed your OS to 8.1...

Because a hard, or factory, reset generally fixes 99% of all software issues by setting it up as if it's a new OOTB device, sometimes this improves performance and/or battery life as well.

Just an FYI, I spoke with a Nokia Customer Service rep about the WP8.1 warranty issue yesterday. I'm in the middle of trying to get my 1520 repaired due to a software issue (I think). She informed me that my warranty was, in fact, no longer valid due to my participation in the dev preview program and the fact that WP8.1 was installed on my phone. Here is her email:

"Hi Matthew,

Thank you for emailing the Nokia Careline.

We understand your frustration regarding your phone. In response to this, please be advised that the reason why your phone's warranty expired is because of Windows 8.1 developers preview. The Windows 8.1 developers preview is not yet official and as said in the terms and condition for installing the said software it voids the warranty of the phone. And we cannot replicate this as there is no official Windows 8.1 released yet, the only place where you can get support is from Microsoft Developer Network forum:

http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/home?forum=winphoneosissues

http://dev.windowsphone.com/en-us/develop/devpreview

We are hoping for your understanding and we appreciate your patience and cooperation regarding this matter.

If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact us again. To ensure proper handling of your case, kindly continue using the current subject line.

You may also call Nokia Careline at 1-888-665-4228 from Mondays to Fridays at 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. EST (closed on national public holidays) for immediate assistance.

Kind regards,

Jacqueline M.

Nokia Inc."

I don't buy her excuse, but it is what it is.

You need to re-think this. You had an issue on 8.0 & decided if you upgraded to 8.1 that might fix it. The logic of that escapes me !

Is your issue hardware or software ? oops we don't know ... we're on a Dev Preview (beta) OS w possible hardware problems on the device ...

... and if you feel you're getting beat up, you are, your logic is flawed. But, ultimately the points made may help, think of it as tough love.

I hope your screen name is just that, please tell me you don't really fix jets.

The issue is we have dated firmware. I have some of these same issues, if Cyan doesnt fix it then i will get a replacement. If Cyan doesnt push soon, i may go crazy tho.

Assuming you're using 8.1, I ran into a similar issue recently and I was totally freaking out. Basically I had tried configuring VPN but couldn't get it working, then I forgot to disable it and I couldn't connect on LTE or WiFi. Just disable VPN if it's that issue.
