I personally wouldn't buy a low end Windows Phone because I think WP goes very well with high end systems. However, not everyone can afford a 1520 or 930, so if they still want WP they will probably get the 530.

I used to think that the 520 won't sell much because of the specs compared to the other higher phone models, but look at it now. A lot of people use it. This could happen with the 530 as well.

Its all about where you live and how phones are sold in your region. In Europe / North America (also S. America?) most people buy a carrier subsidised phone for $200 / €200 / ?150 and don't mind being locked into a contract for around 2 years. These are the markets where flagships thrive.

In the ME and South Asia people buy phones off contract, and a flagship at $800 / €700 / ?500 wouldn't fit most budgets - and the reason the 520 was such a runaway hit was because countries like these have a huge market that many people in the west seem unable to comprehend.

You're right that the same will probably happen to the 530 as well, but I don't see too many people thrilled about it in the US or UK.

Ok lets go over this just once more. L530 has Adreno 302 while L520 has Adreno 305. L530 has only 4gb memory while L520 has 8gb memory. L530 has a fixed focus camera while L520 has autofocus. L530 can only record videos upto wvga(854*480) while L520 can record upto 720p. L530 has normal LCD display while L520 has IPS LCD L530 is thicker than L520 And to add salt to the wound/insult to injury L530 will be more expensive than L520. Now if this phone was called L430 or L420 and priced lower than L520 then it would have been fine but as it stands now L530 is a really poor value proposition as L520/525 are much better not to mention Moto E is also much better. When L520 came out last year it took the world by storm and so did Moto E this year but L530 forget improving on L520 it instead downgrades the specs and slaps a higher price. This does not bode well for future of MS phone division and windows phone ecosystem.

Exactly bud! Exactly! I've been trying to tell these people the same thing since yesterday...

In my opinion, it should not have been called the 530. As Mohit said, it should rather be called the 420 or the 430 or even the 510. It's a lower spec device than the 520, but is named the 530 which indicates a superior device to the 520, when in reality it is not. The only plus to the 530 over the 520 is the fact that it's a quad core. And even then it's not really a plus as the GPU is worse. Most likely all down to marketing as the 520 is incredibly popular. People who are not clued on to the 'tech specs' of these devices will see 'Lumia 530' and think "Oh yeah, that's like that Lumia 520 phone.. Must be an upgraded one."

Simple. Customers like you is bad business. You should live in China dude. You will get cheap there.

I don't know what Microsoft is thinking, but they should include 2GB of RAM, an octacore processor, 1080p and a 50mp camera and price it for AT LEAST $50 otherwise this thing will fail on the market. I mean, I can walk into Walmart and buy a $200 Dell laptop that can play Crysis 3 at 4K 60fps 360 no-scope any day, why can't Microsoft lose money on a product so I can spend less money!!!!

Did I get that about right?

Lol, So many things wrong here..
First off, A 200$ Laptop that plays "Crysis 3" at 60FPS? lmao. Lemme get this straight, A near to perfect rig with a AMD Radeon R9 290X struggles to punch out an average of 48 fps!(btw, thats a Mid-High range Desktop GPU!) so there ain't no way your gonna get a 200$ lappy to play crysis 3 at a staggering 60 fps, lol and never in 4K Rendering. Cheers :)

then you havent seen a true performance laptop,my laptop can play it at 45 fps with medium settings
ohh and i guess you didnt get the sarcasm op wanted to potray when he said $200

not just that,
in addition to your points the snapdragon 200 quad core(L530,L630) is actually more or less equal or even lower performing than the snapdragon s4(L520) except when rendering web pages where the snapdragon 200 is better
id rather buy a L525 or a L520 over a L530 or a L630 if i ever have to(already have a 720 and 820 :D )

So, I'm going to wait a few months until the Lumia 530 reaches its intended price of around $50, but then I'm going to choose between one of the following... which do you think is better:

This (great deal for $38.99)
Or the Lumia 530 (it'll be around $11 bucks more expensive but I'm not sure if it's worth the extra cost)

What say you?

Did you not read that this is a starter phone for someone who wants to use Windows 8.1 but isn't necessarily a gamer - this phone would be perfect for that reason and I am thinking of getting one for my Mom who has NEVER had a smart phone and never used a computer

Actually the Lumia 530 will sell well. Its targeted at the ?60 (₹6000) range for emerging markets. This means within a month or two we can expect discounts or deals that will eventually see it sell at ?50 (₹5000)
And within 6 months it might as well sell for ?35-40 (₹3500-₹4000)
This is very good as entry level Lumia will be a wonderful addition. Someone mentioned the name Lumia 420. Well this is like a 420 except that its called 530!

Great deal

I do think Microsoft should have phased out 512mb phones. It wouldn't take a massive jump in price, if any at all, to include 1gb.

Thing is this is not really a true 'Microsoft' phone. Its from the Nokia roadmap, these devices have already been developed, tested and manufactured, its not simple to just upgrade it. MS wouldn't bother investing any more time or money in something they know is not theirs, with a new OS not far away, and with all the upheaval going on. Once the dust has settled from the shakeups, layoffs and integrations we will see a unified OS with great hardware aggressively pushed by MS both High and low end with competitive specs that people cant complain about.

I think this phone will do fine. When are people going to get that it's a low range budget phone? Plus, many people have reported that they have zero issues playing games on their Windows Phones that have only 512MB of RAM. Relax! Sheesh...
