The 1520 was purposely configured by AT&T to not see some of T-Mobile's network, so try turning on the 1700Mhz band following the instructions here:
Nokia Lumia 1520 - Windows Central Forums. If you do this, you have effectively turned your RM-940 to RM-938, at least as far as the radio is concerned.
It can be a substantial help and you'll get 3.5G in many places you would only otherwise get EDGE a. That said, if there is bad coverage where you are, this obviously wont help it.
