It was just a year ago when Nokia announced the L1020 as the world's best imaging experience on a smartphone.

It was supposed to be the king of all camera phones, and it did, until Lumia Denim introduced Living Images, HDR, continuous focus, enhanced camera algorithms, faster image capture, and 4K video recording. Some of which the 1020 desperately needs (faster image capture, anyone?).

It is now officially dethroned as the smartphone with the best imaging experience by a 930 and 1520. If it's going to be dethrone, it should be done by its successor, shouldn't it?

And isn't the whole "because of hardware limitation" excuse getting old? Sure, 4K recording and surround sound recording do need a more capable hardware, but what about Living Images, HDR and continuous focus? We've seen Living Images work on the Nokia Camera Beta app, and there are other phones capable of doing HDR and continuous auto focus without a quad-core processor. Not to mention the fact that Nokia has managed to enable 41MP image capture on a dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus processor before.

So what do you guys think? (P.S. This post is not a rant, but to gather the opinions of fellow WP users.)

I think that Denim hasn't actually been released on any devices yet let alone on the 1020, and that saying that it is missing all of those features is incredibly premature. Wait until they actually announce what is going to be left out. Also I will say, HDR might be technically possible to do on a phone with a 41 megapixel sensor and only a dual core processor, but it might be a user experience nightmare.

It's regrettable that this is what seems to be the case.

The processor in the 1020 (what I happen to be writing this on) is very different from the Snapdragon 800 in the latest phones.
Now, it probably is possible to make Denim work like it does on the 930/1520 for the majority of features (obviously with exception to the hardware specific surround sound/4K recording), however it may not be worth the work to Microsoft Mobile to bother as the Lumia 1020 has stopped being produced and soon won't be on the market. So the investment into making this work is unlikely to see a return financially.

We all know that they're working on the 1030 by now which'll most likely include a dedicated imaging processor like the Nokia 808 did, and that's what they're going to invest into developing.

But of course, no one outside the company can comment on how the Lumia Denim firmware will work on the 1020 when it's released. Maybe we will see improvements in launch times or other new features, we shall see.
But commenting right now about what we will or won't get as though you know it for a fact is foolish.
