Modern batteries, including those in phones and portable "power banks", are usually equipped with circuitry designed to prevent overcharging. I wouldn't worry much about overcharging, but it's always best to avoid leaving your device plugged and unattended*.

*- A lot of things can happen: constant supply of electricity may wear down the resistors or overheat the internal circuitry and the battery, and your electric bill may be affected. There have been reports of phones burning and bulging - though these are rare cases of factory defects, it's still wise to avoid them.
