Just picked up a new 920 (unlocked AT&T) and can now compare with my 830

Took a long time to go through all the updates, however I'm now on 8.1
Also took a long time to restore all my apps from a previous backup from my 830.
Interesting as heck, the 920 is a lot "snappier" (read -> faster) than the 830, at least right now.
The graphics chip in the 920 is better and I'm kind of sure the ram in the 920 is faster and maybe even dual channel.
Also, even though the 920 is a lot heavier than the 830, it's more "holdable" than the 830, IMHO.
The 920 has the nice curved back and curved edges, not squared and "sharp" like the 830.
It's going to be interesting the next few days. :)

Don't mean to be harsh, more curious than anything. Seems the 920 is certainly "snappier" than my 830.
The "double tap to wake" is much more responsive (yes, touch settings the same on both phones) and the glance screen is much more responsive than on my 830.
Still loading up a lot of music and some additional apps.

Well a couple days now of side by side with my 830 and 920.

- 920 has a better "holdablility" factor because of the Nokia "smile" and round corners I think.
- 920 screen much, much more responsive to touch (yes, both are set for "normal" sensitivity).
- 920 double tap to wake works perfectly 100% of the time, the 830 I can get to work 100% of the time, however I have to use two, easy, kind of slow taps for it.
- 920 is "snappier" scrolling and loading most of the apps that I commonly use. I suspect that's due to the GPU and I think the 920 has faster ram and maybe even dual channel where the 830 has slower, single channel ram.
- 830 has better battery life (so far, as expected) though not a lot better.

I side-graded from the 920 to 830. I like the feel of the 830 better and the 830 is much snappier than the 920 imo. I agree that the touch reactions (double tap and overall sensitivity) on the 920 are better, but scrolling, etc., are better on the 830. The screen on the 830 is much brighter to me. My issues with the 830 vs. the 920 is that Bluetooth was better on the 920 and iheartradio worked on the 920. If these issues get resolved, I won't be unhappy with my decision. Battery life is WAY better and the heating up issue is WAY better on the 830 based on my usage of both.

The CPU in the 920 is faster per core by quite a big margin but it has two less cores. So it depends on what you do if the 920 will turn out to be faster. And yes, it will in some cases. And yes the 920 has dual channel ram, while the 830 has single channel ram. The GPU is similar in both devices but since the memory bandwidth of the 920 is higher, this pays in overall quite a bit better graphics performance in some games.

The 830 should have a LOT better battery life in return. And comparing my 925 to my 735 this really shows.

But yes, your findings make perfect sense. The 830 however has other benefits that the 920 will have to miss, like a better, way better and sharper camera. dolby something and a few other neat tricks that came over the years.

Yup, probably. It's smoother for sure.
It's also "snappier" (faster) for some reason, opening apps, etc.
The angle of view of the screen is a little better also on the 920. I just compared them side by side.
Not sure why that would be.

Fred

920's scrolling might be feeling more smooth because of the 60 Hz display aka Puremotion HD+.

IMO, the screen on the 920 is better. Blacks are better and they are set the same.
I'll use them both, side by side, for one more day (it's been two days already) and unless something really changes my mind, my 830 is going back in it's box and on the book shelf. :p

Fred

What do you think of the displays between the two? How are blacks?

The 920 is a superior phone minus the camera and horrid battery life when compared to the newer SD400 processor phones. I'm still using it while waiting for my 830 to return from Microsoft repair. The 920 does tend to heat up as well while playing games (expected), the 830 stays cool

Actually camera too would be superior, if the post processing didn't kill all the details leaving a mere <5MP quality image in the name of 7 or 8MP. I agree with you on battery life n heating though.

My 920 doesn't get hot, nothing like the 930 I tried for a couple of weeks. It will get a little warm when using some of the chat apps. The couple of chat apps that I use really are CPU intensive on all the WP's that I've had (635, 735, 830, 920, 930, 1020, 1520 and Samsung ATIV SE), so that was expected on this 920.
Right now, 3rd day with the 920, my 830 is in it's box, on the bookcase, at home, and I'm at work with my 920 :p

At the 3rd day, I'm liking the 920 more than the 830. Easier to hold, even though it's heavier, much more "snappy", faster. Screen is better, battery life is less, though not a ton less, but certainly less, as expected.
Regarding battery life, I had a Samsung S4 for about one year and it's battery life was what I call horrid, much worse than this 920 I have. I even carried a extra battery with me .
Camera has been fine, better in low light than on the 830. I only use the cp camera for snapshots sometimes anyway. I'm a photographer and use a "camera" for my real photos :p.

Anyway, to me, the 920, overall experience, so far, is proving to be the better phone.

Ah, haven't tried that :)
I've never used the FFC on any cp that I've ever owned, just not in to selfies :p

I'll try it and see what it looks like.

Just took 2 FFC shots with the 830 and 920, in my living room while sitting on the couch in somewhat dim light. It's night here and I'm watching tc.
920 is every bit as clear as the 830 shots and even better in the low light. I used the Camera360 app in both phones for the shots.

Well, it's been a couple of days now that my 830 has been in it's box sitting on the shelf and the 920 has been my daily driver (except when I tried the FFC on the 830 to compare with the 920).
For me and IMHO, the 920 is better in everything (again that I do and for me) than the 830 other than battery life.
The 920 is snappier, better screen, easier to hold, camera seems better, everything just runs quicker. Screen is probably better because of the insanely fast refresh rate and phone seems faster probably because of the dual channel ram and GPU.
So, the 830 stays in it's box for another week or so, just to be sure, then I'll probably just sell it.
Funny how a 2 year old plus cp, is "better" than a new one, though the 920 was a flagship at the time it came out.
It's really a great phone.

:)
