Hi to the .DNG experts.

Please educate me about this format.
I took pictures in a museum I visited last weekend and I compared the 5mp .jpeg files to the "supposedly" 16mp .dng files.

I used FastStone to view my .dng pics.
The .dng file showed that it takes 20.5mb of space but the dimensions show that it is 2688 x 1512
On the other hand my 5mp jpeg picture takes 1.16mb of space but dimensions show 3072 x 1728 (4.06mp) 24 bit

Am I missing something here? Shoudn't the .dng files have bigger dimensions.
Please elaborate.

Thanks

First... I'm going to state I'm NOT a dng "expert." I'm just starting down the road of dng use and manipulation.

My understanding is the dng is (raw) sensor data from the camera. But any software that looks at it is going to "frame" some of that data as pixels to use for a reference point. Editing then sifts through the data and applies stored aspects of the imaging data...

Here are some more details: https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/digital-negative.html

I noticed that Rawer on the phone edits out a 16MP 16:9 at an approximate 4MP output; a 1/4 conversion...

It matches my limited experience...

I've not really fiddled with desktop software yet (although I did install GIMP) to see about forcing a larger MP output.

You may want to peruse the Photography Forum for more in depth info.

Rawer open image in smaller size to speed up opening process. You can change this in app settings. There is an option to turn off "half size .."

OK... It may have been the way I got the Rawer processed pics off the phone the last couple of times by emailing them to myself.

I just edited some fresh shots in Rawer and took them off over a USB connection with my PC. The files are satisfyingly large.

Both... Over 10MB and over 5,000 pixels on the long edge.

Here are the reduced copies for this forum... Both taken with Lumia Camera and edited through Rawer.

The original of this edit, pulled off the phone was 10.1MB and 5376 x 3024
