Why can't I hear my Nokia Lumia ringtone when I have the headphones plugged in?

Nokia Lumia problem with audible ringtone

I have a Noka Lumia 635. When I have the headphones plugged in the ringtone is routed to the headphones, and cannot be heard otherwise. Can this be changed?

When you plug in to headphones or connect via Bluetooth, you are instructing the phone that you are listening that way...

I don't know of any way to change that. It is an Off/On system.

It's a very stupid limitation of Windows Phone and it drove me nuts.
Here's what I've been able to find out:

• With headphones plugged in the phone will only ring through the headphones, however notification sounds will be routed through the speaker as well.
• With bluetooth headphones/headset connected the phone will ring through the speaker as well as the headphones/headset, however notification sounds will only be routed through the headphones/headset and not the speaker.

It's moronic, really.
