I have recently acquired a 640 and have backed up my 820.

I cannot find how to restore my apps and texts once I have used my 640, other than to do a hard reset, which seems a bit extreme.

Transfer my data does not seem to include transferring text messages.

Any guidance would be most welcome.

You only can restore an apps+settings backup during the setup . So if you already did the setup on your 640 then indeed a hard reset is needed.
This however excludes text back up. If you enable text back up on your 820 and your 640 then the texts will be visible on your 640. (but this may take some time. So for text backup you do not need to do a "restore" also with a clean install texts will be back-uped ro your new phone.

Hi, I started with the "Transfer my data" option, but this only seemed to let me select contacts to transfer.

The contacts transferred nicely yesterday, but no texts.

Before I went down the reset route, I happened to check a new text and, 21 hours after my contacts transferred, all my texts were there.

    Thanks again for the advice.
