8X Unlocked AT&T - Ting - Tethering

I just put my wifes phone on Ting and turned tethering on in the control panel. However, no matter what I do on her 8X, it always says - Internet sharing is not supported.

Anyone have any advice here. Is the phone not being able to tether because of AT&T? Do I have to flash the firmware to enable it?
The switch is there to turn it on, but when I slide it on, I get that message.

I'm having the same issues with my Lumia 920 AT&T. Anyone have any knowedge on this?

Basically, all AT&T phones contain a feature in ROM to check your AT&T account for authorization to use tethering regardless if you are using it on AT&T or not (after all it is an AT&T phone and AT&T could care less how it works in another network). This is a software feature baked into the ROM and can't be disabled by SIM unlocking.

I am considering switching from Verizon to either ATT, T-Mobile, Ting, or ... and want to use tethering. I plan to purchase the phone from Microsoft unlocked. Does anyone know if I will be able to tether?
