Couple of questions:
Are all Lumia 640 dual sims?
Since L640 is slated to get Win 10, will it be possible to load VOIP like Groove IP Lite? Thought I read that some Android apps will make their way over to WP on W10.
I have taken one of the family lines to Android for Groove since reception at home is bad and the wifi is great. I am using the Android on a FREE Ring Plus line and it serves as a second home phone line.
My current Lumia 521s are with Lycamobile and they (unlike their parent TMobile) block wifi calling. Not sure what that business model is about...
No, some of them are single SIM and others are dual SIM. The locked ones sold in the US are single SIM.

Windows 10 on phones will not be the same as 10 on computers... It is moving closer and convergence is ongoing. Some Apps are already universal. Check the App store in a browser from PC. It will say what that App works on. I'm not familiar with it.

Apps coming from Android are delayed and may be canceled. There is still iOS and Win 32 porting.

Thanks to all who participated ;-)
The wifi calling (available on TMo but blocked on Lycamobile MVNO) is a real necessity in my case. I guess I'll just have to suffer through a free line of Ring Plus service on an Android phone as a second line in the house where cell coverage is spotty.

Just got an email from Microsoft, $39.00 for a new AT&T Lumia 640. I have a gray market 640 with dual sim on AT&T and was thinking of getting a "legal" version anyway so I can use Visual Voicemail, which I miss. So I jumped on this, they even give free shipping! 39 bucks for a 640 is an absolute screamin' deal.
BestBuy is slotted to get you this at $29.99 during Black Friday deals. You can grab few easily there since not many ppl would be taking it !!

I would not count on them not going quickly. $30 for a solid phone for a kid... Or even a backup phone or just to give the OS a run. But then again, I actually like Windows Phone since I was open minded enough to give it a try.

Well... I have seen different mindset in my local store. Firstly - its really hard to find Windows phones in that store. You would see most of the rush going with Samsung or iphone devices, so if you can find where WP are, you can easily grab it :)

Yeah. That is why I mentioned I am partial now because of a good experience. My wife likes the look of the Windows phone OS, but is determined she must stick with Samsung.

From my reading of the BB flyer... The $29 640 is a "door buster" and may be a ticketed item for those in the store que.

Try starting a chat with BB online and ask?

It's locked to AT&T's network, so no. Since it's a Go Phone, AT&T won't unlock it until after 6 months of service, so you'd have to find a 3rd party unlocking service. I just bought a code on eBay, won't get it for a few days, supposedly. Will post back the results.

It should work on a domestic (U.S.) AT&T MVNO, not that this helps you, just FYI.

You can unlock it for FREE, and many people have reported that this particular AT&T Lumia 640 works in many countries outside the US, and I've done it myself!

Here is the screenshot of the procedures to get free unlock code from AT&T - the exact same procedures that I and hundreds (if not thousands) of people have gone through and successfully gotten the code for FREE!

Yup, I've used that procedure for a few devices myself. Personally, I liked it better when you could just call them and they'd give up the code w/o any BS. But anyyyyyywayssssss....

On the Unlock Request page that link points to, it says

Prepaid / GoPhone?

  • The device must be active for at least six months of paid service.

The 640 is a GoPhone. Has anyone been able to unlock inside of those six months, or having never activated it on AT&T at all?

If not, I believe that's an issue for that dude in Europe. Sounds like he wants a phone that will work in Germany out-of-the-box. And I don't want to wait, either.

EDIT: OK, I submitted a request per those instructions. Will know in "two business days"

The BB BF ad does not state that the Lumia 640 is a Door Buster. When viewing the ad on my laptop, only pages 1 through 4 say "Door Buster" at the top left on each page. Page #31 has the L640 and other low-priced phones and "Door Buster" is not present anywhere on the page - it just says "Cell Phones" in the location where "Door Buster" is on pages 1-4.

Trying to get information from Best Buy Customer Support is useless as I wasted close to an hour of my time making multiple calls to their standard Customer Service numbers. I finally left a voicemail message for their Executive Resolution Team at the Corporate level saying that I wished to order 3 of the phones online and wanted to know if I would be able to do that when the pricing went live. Here is the reply I got back which does not answer the question I asked :eck:.

Hi David,

Thank you for contacting the Executive Offices at Best Buy. Your concern regarding the Microsoft Lumia 640 phone was forwarded to me for additional research. The online price states, “Unless otherwise noted, prices valid: November 26-28, 2015.”

We are unable to locate any ‘otherwise noted’ information that would lead us to believe the price will not be honored. I am seeing that your local store has a limited number of phones, but that could change very quickly on Friday. If you attempt to order the items online, and the items are available, but for some reason you are not receiving the $29.99 price, please contact me directly. Thank you for your voicemail and I look forward to assisting you further.

Sincerely,

Follow the instruction strictly, and you don't have to wait for 6 months! I bought the phone on Thur, submit the request to unlock on Friday, and get the code on the following Monday! The phone was with AT&T service for a total of ZERO day!

The key thing is DO NOT power on the phone until you get the code (or at least do not power on with the AT&T SIM card provided - some success cases reported), and chose "Non AT&T Mobility Customer" when requesting for unlock code.

So, one can still get it work internationally "out of box" - all he/she needs is the IMEI code which is available from packing material/box, submit the IMEI to AT&T website for unlock code. Unlock code should be available (through email) by the time he/she receive the physical phone outside of US, he/she just need to replace the SIM, power it on and key in the unlock code and start using it with the telco's service. I've gone through the process personally!

Thanks. I followed the steps, except... I did turn it on briefly w/the provided sim, doh! This was before I read about unlocking it. Probably not on more than 2 or 3 minutes. Hopefully that didn't mess things up. Guess I'll find out if/when I get a code.
