Why is my new Lumia 950 overheating?

Windows Central Question

I returned a 950 one day after purchase to AT&T due to massive overheating, and a two hour battery life. Clearly a problem. On my new handset, I didn't install the memory card, thinking that may be an issue. It seemed fine, almost cool to the touch for most of the day. Then, tonight, while simply browsing on Edge (no other apps running), it is ROCKET hot.

Well, my phone seemed mostly fine the first couple weeks. But today I've had SERIOUS battery drain issues. It literally lasts 3-5 hours at max. I have mine setup to save things to SD card except for apps.

I've pulled the battery, stop allowing Edge to run in the background, etc. Doesn't seem to matter. It's like the battery suddenly has 1/4 the capacity it used to. And the phone definitely gets warm now.

The phone is even saying how little the battery lasts, 48% and only 2.75 hours left? WTF?

Try turning on Battery Saver and see if that helps.

Overheating?
Did it turn off? If not, it's not overheating.
My 950 got hot and had battery drain for about two days, but it was also loading backups, downloading/installing apps and processing 120 GB of media from the microSD.

After the phone stabilized, it cooled off and the battery got a lot better.

I'm on battery saver, pretty sure it's having zero impact. My phone has been off the charger for less than a half hour and this is what I get...

So 6 hours of battery life at best? With battery saver on? Pretty sure my battery has gone to ****. Who do I contact now, AT&T or Microsoft? I got the phone launch day. AT&T does 30 day warranties right?

This has been discussed to death, only the XL has liquid cooling. Here are FCC pics of the 950 in various states of disassembly. Click on Internal Photos and tell me if you see a heatpipe.

yup, we have all seen it discussed to death. everyone seems to be pulling stories from the MS announcement event, which did make it seem like both 950's had liquid cooling.

Also, with the term "overheating" being used, it's driving me nuts. does the 950 get hot? yes, yes it does. is it overheating? probably not. if it were, i am pretty sure a few 950's would be totally dead by now. running hot doesn't equal overheating.

Wtf! 4 hours... That's insane, I think either the battery isn't settled or you have a defective unit. I unplugged mine at 6 am and been using it normally and I'm at 70%.

I was having battery issues with my ATT Lumia 950. I tried soft and hard resets to no avail. Finally, LumiaHelp on twitter suggested Windows Device Recovery Tools to reinstall the OS. It took about 22 minutes for me and my internet connection. Afterward, I restored from backup, updated the phone to the newest build (10.0.10586.29) and like 50 something app updates. My battery went from 100% to 85% for the whole process and only got slightly warm. A vast improvement over what I was experiencing. My phone charges properly (8% to 100% in 45 minutes) and doesn't just get super hot. I went from about 40% to 25% over about 7 hrs while sleeping with glance screen set at 30 sec, Bluetooth and wifi on, a few emails during the night and my alarm set. While this isn't stellar, its a vast improvement over what it was. A few more days of testing should give me better results.

I noticed edge has a habbit of loading every page as a tab sometimes. When edge is using up a lot of battery go to the tabs button and close everything. I had 50 tabs open at one point when I looked.

Original poster here...

My second Lumia 950 seemed better for a while, but lately, I've had the same issue. It was not any of the reasons mentioned below, regarding background programs etc...

I'm fairly certain that the issue is directly linked to the SD card usage. I've tried 3 different memory cards, to no avail - I have MASSIVE overheating and battery life that drains about a percent per minute. There is DEFINITELY a problem with the 950 and some, if not all, memory cards.

I've used a Sandisk 64, 256 and a Samsung 128 card.

Have you upgraded to the latest version?

changing the subject slightly... I have an old DT-900 that I got free with my Lumia 1020. I never used it until now on my 950. and so far its taking a long time to get to 50% from 14% (over 2hours). Is this normal? Also finding the 950 to be getting very hot! The glass is quite hot to touch?

is this charger ok to use? is this normal behaviour? would I be better off with a new DT-903? in that would it be quicker and cause less heat?

My main concern is its hot for over 2 hours already, if I was quick charging with the wall charger it would only be hot for the first 40 minutes?

with regards to all comments about I'm finding my unit to be running very well. pretty much no heat unless charging and battery usage is around 40% per day

Well I am no specialist, and I am definitely not the best person to compare your Lumia experience too, but I do think I pinpointed where my problems are occurring on my second Lumia 950 xl.
So for a while now I experienced like a lot of users that the 950 xl would warm up. Sometime it would warm up a lot. When it would warm up a lot I found out that some of the old apps that I was using were not compatible with this version. So I reinstalled the phone, and only installed apps that could be found in the app store and stated they would work with this version. I noticed in the days following that it would get warm but not so warm anymore that you could cook an egg on it.
I then started to look into the problem why it still kept getting warm. Even though I was not doing anything strange or questionable. After going though a lot of forums I still could not figure out what the problem was. As suggested I went through the battery save and found one thing strange. My messaging was taking up at least 40% of my battery during a 24h period. Went and did some research on this and found out that the e-mail was having problems syncing. As soon as the syncing problems were over the phone would cool down. Have tested this theory several times and as of this moment it has been true to all my warmth and battery life issues. Solve the sync problems and battery life goes back to normal (meaning it is not drained in a few hours) and the phone no longer gets warm. Maybe this will help some of you to pinpoint your issues with the new and wonderful Lumia 950 and 950 xl.

That's some good research on the email sync issue. Between waiting several days for things to settle down, moving apps from the SD card, deleting incompatible apps and looking into email sync, hopefully most 950 owners will get decent battery life.
