facebook lost

So today about 2 pm EST my Icon stopped allowing me to use facebook. The tile was still there but kind of greyed out although I can see I have a new notification. Cant open it from the tile or scrolling the app list. Doesn't want to update so it's just kind of stuck. I'm sure I can uninstall it and reinstall it but am curious if anyone else is experiencing this? I'm still on Denim because I bricked my last phone on DP so just patiently waiting. And waiting...

8.1 Denim Facebook got updated today. Delete reinstall.

But I wonder why this step needed to be done? I was afraid of losing messenger in the process but that didn't happen. Obviously it's a separate app but the way things go... you know.
