How can I fix update error 80072f8f8?

I cannot update my Lumia 820 running Windows 8.1 apps due to an error 80072f8f8. I have checked that my region, date and time and language and all are correct.

Also, is win 10 available for this phone?

Are you installing apps to your SD card?
If you remove the SD can you install apps to your phones memory?

Win10M is only available via the Windows Insider app.

Phone update is set to install new apps to phone, as are new downloads.

If you have an SD card installed, can you remove it and try again?
How much free space do you have in your internal phone memory?

Are you signed in ok with your Microsoft account? Can you log out and back in again.
Failing that do a soft reset.

It seems you cannot log out of an MS account without doing a full factory reset. I tried a soft reset and I still have the error. I have just run a backup to the cloud, but if I then do a hard reset, and restore the cloud backup, surely the 80072f8f8 error will come back too?
I really need to be able to update my apps. I notice that I have no problem installing new apps. That works fine. So why can't I update existing apps?

Just to add: If I can install new apps, my sign in to MS must surely be OK
