Best way to transfer data to new windows phone

My wife has a Lumia 1020 running WP8.1 and I've got a Lumia 1520 running Windows 10 Mobile. We're thinking about getting the 950/950XL combo. What would be the best way to transfer all the data to the new phones? We also use the same Microsoft ID on both phones so that our calendars are automatically synced if that makes any difference.

I'm thinking just create a backup and when you set up your new phones, use the backup for you and her respectively.

So you can backup a wp8.1 device and then restore on wp10?

Back up your data/phone contents and upload all of your media to One Drive. Then, if you use the same Microsoft account when you set up the 950 and select the appropriate option, all of your vital content will be migrated and you'll have access to your media through the One Drive app to view or download them onto your new WM10 device.

I went from a 1520 to 950xl and didn't lose anything.

Another way would be to do the backups for text, contacts and apps. Copy all media from the old device to the new devices via pc which is usually faster than using onedrive (unless you have really fast internet speeds).
