Only newer Lumia's get windows 10 update officially .you can use windows insider app to get windows 10 update

Try Googling for Windows Release Official News. Your phone is not Win10 eligible. You can only join the Windows Insider Program and download the Official Win10 Threshold Release via Prerelease Ring.
Your phone will never got Redstone updates after Anniversary Update, but you'll can use last Win10 Threshold all time you desire

I want to know what will happen to unsupported devices that don't upgrade to .420+ before the anniversary update comes out. I wonder if the insider app will still take you to .420+ or will you be stuck on 8.1 forever?

I highly suspect the latter but I don't think we'll know until it happens.

I hope so, I have .420 on my 920 and its perfect finally... I will keep my 1020 on 8.1 for the dirt nap because of the camera quality.
