Personally, I would recommend converting your MKV files to MP4/M4V. Most MKV files are x.264 video with either AAC or AC3 audio, which is the standard for MP4/M4V containers. And MP4/M4V files are more supported across more devices (phones, TV's, computers, etc.)

press play video and movies player, both free. now if only there was a way to set a metro app as default for mkv; the file type doesn't seem to be listed in settings

Press Play Video don't play very well 720p movies.
And movies player don't play 720p at all :)
