How to: Xbox one or PS4 on a NON-HDMI tv or projector

If you are like a lot of people, you have a older TV that you use your 360 on now. I still have a classic(6-7 years old now) 65" 1080i Rear projection TV, this only has component HD inputs (analog). I was going to upgrade it finally this year (still looks great, as I have tweaked the hell out of it) but, with the announcement of 4K TVs, I want to wait till about Spring/Summer next year before jumping on a new large screen TV (CES in Jan will be flooded with 4K tvs and lower prices from good brands with a spring/summer release frame).

This brings up a major dilemma for me and others, I want to play xbox one/PS4 on my current TV but, HDCP brings a major problem. HDCP is a digital secure connection to your TV, allowing 1080p from your devices (truth be told, analog/component could provide 4K res). The people who created HDCP are the people in the movie industry who don't want people to be able to output a full 1080p signal in analog because of people copying it and making PERFECT copies. Both the PS4 and the Xbox One will use HDCP (it has been said, to what extent is another story). This means, I can not use these systems on my current TV.

I'm in IT but, for many years, I did work as a Home theater/Audio video specialist. I have setup home theater setups well over $100K and hundreds of them. I even ran my own business for a while building custom Home theater PCs.

I have spent some time investigating how to work around this issue and I found a device that will address this problem for me, it is about the ONLY device that I found. It's called the HDfury, it will take a HDMI signal, strip out the HDCP signal and output in analog (component or VGA). If you put 720P into this device, it will output 720P, it's just a strait converter same with 480P or even 1080p/i. It even has color adjustments and the reviews are, that it gives a better picture than just going component directly from a device. These are commonly used for High end projectors that only take RGB/Componet in and people who want to see 1080p on them.

The HDfury 2 (that has component HD out or the HDfury 1 that has only VGA out), will allow this and allow people to use Xbox one, PS4, Blu-ray, etc on a NON-HDMI-HDCP TV. They make a few models but, one of these will take care of this problem for people.

This adapter is not cheap, the HDfury 2 is $179.99 and the HDfury 1 (VGA output only) is $99. This is all you will need for this. Right now, there is a few on ebay for $90 (ebay normally blocks these so if you need one get it soon).

I just wanted to post this for people who thought they could not use their Xbox one or PS4 on a older TV, so yes, this is possible !!!!!

It a bit expensive won't it be cheaper to just buy a new TV as an long time investment or I think you can get TV or monitors for the same price with HDMI port.

However it a good solution for those that don't want to get a new TV.

Yea, I was looking at a 4K tv but, they want $6K for it.... Panasonic and Sony both have 65" 4K tvs now (the Pana does not release for like another month), they are both $5999.99... The Sony is the early one but, the Pana is the new one with display port and HDMI 2.0. In this case, I would prefer the Panasonic. The Sony could be had around $4500 with some hunting around but, it's still a big amount of money.

So with CES being in January, and from the years of watching A/V gear, I can tell you the retailers need new tvs to push and 3D is pretty much dead from a new TV sales point (no one is going to get rid of a 1080p tv to upgrade to get 3-D) but, people might make the jump for double the res. 4K tvs are the answer for a slowing TV sales marketplace and a $6K for a large screen wont sell a ton of them.

Also the fact that Sony and Microsoft BOTH said that their systems will support 4K, it really sees to me, to just hold tight for another 6-8 months.

I got mine for $90 (for the HDfury 2) and it will put the Band-Aid on this problem for now. I plan on upgrading everything I have to HDMI cables even switch boxes so I can be 100% ready when I am ready to buy a new tv. This adapter will allow me to do this and with a better picture. For $90 ? I think it's totally worth it... I guess everyone has their a different thought here.

BUT, if you were in a case where you have a perfectly working TV but, can't afford to spend $500+ on a good 40-50" 1080p set, this would help for people in this case...

Just wanted to help people who are worried or don't even know about this....

HDCP is evil, another case of DRM making honest people have to feel like crooks just to use the content/devices that they paid for...

Yep I read the spec as well for being a SONY ******!

But anyway should be great and being passive 3D makes it alot better!

And a few reviews make be jealous of the reviewers it got high recommendation, I just want to see one! (Visit to a SONY store!)

Ps I also bought a digital to analog converter which uses the optical audio, but it doesn't work (white plug makes a screeching noise, red doesn't make a noise at all)

Yep, if your using a computer monitor (aka VGA), The HDfury 2 will do what you need (VGA/Component with audio out). If your connecting via composite (yellow video cable), I don't know of a device off the top of my head that will do that you would need to strip the protection off then need another converter to convert it to composite (this device is not cheap adding that on would be pretty expensive).

You might be feeding 5.1 audio stream into that device that only supports 2.0 audio (L and R), causing the noise your getting. GO into your xbox 360's main settings menu and adjust it to 2.0 audio and not 5.1 (default I believe). Your better off just using the Microsoft cable that has L/R audio out. What type of video are you using ?

The question that comes up is what level Microsoft or Sony will do HDCP, will they do it on games or just protected content (streaming videos, HBO etc) ? Because of breaking or stripping off HDCP is a questionable legal side (your breaking copy protection, like ripping a Blu-ray or something). If Microsoft and Sony do not use HDCP for gaming (and current gen they don't, sony does for Blu-ray), then you will find affordable adapters to allow these systems to be added to any TV, even that old 13" if you wanted to (with the limits of what you cant do)but, if they force you to use HDCP on gaming, then this will be the ONLY device that will allow this and it's only for HD TVs (Component HD or RGB/VGA)

thanks for all that info, but I'm using a dvi to HDMI converter, I have video but audio is the problem. I will try the system settings when I go to his house next week

Ah, if the tv has DVI input, it should have HDCP (not all of them do, it needs to be DVI-D to support HDCP), then it's just your audio converter...

yup, that's what I meant. I just need a way to get audio since the Xbox one can't get audio from the analog audio converter ( doesn't have the input)

thanks! This worked, I made the audio from 5.1 to stereo sound and it sounds flawless now! Thanks again, now when the Xbox One comes out I'll be prepared!

Some of those converters dont down convert 5.1 to 2.0, so a better one would be able to do that but, then you miss information (5.1 breaks audio up, so the L/R dont get all the information that they would in stereo because it spreads it out to the center and rears)

You will still have to deal with HDCP.... So that might work for some of it, but, you will get a black screen when things use HDCP. If your going to VGA, then get the HDfury 1. That would do HDMI (DVI to HDMI) to VGA. That Device is $99, or if you watch ebay, I have seen the base HDfury go for $30-50 when they show up.

You also have to worry if your projector can display 480p, 720p or 1080p (it does not support any interlaced displays). If it can not, you need a scaler to change it to a compatable format. If you projector will convert them,then you should be fine.

If you set your Xbox 360 to 720p and it displays fine, then you wont have to worry about the scaler with the Xbox one, you said a older VGA projector, so for all I know it was a old 480i projector (as I still know people who use one, why I will never know). You didn't give any details on the projector.

The only thnig is HDCP you really would have to worry about. VGA is analog. So you are taking a digital signal that is protected by HDCP security and converting it in to analog. If a devices says it will work with HDCP, it means it supports the security, so it will give you a blank/black image when something is using HDCP. I can't honestly say if games are using HDCP on Xbox one, I heard yes and others no. With the little bugs(audio, video, etc) I have seen on the Xbox one, I would think it could effect you in some way.

You can try the $30 adapter, it might work for you BUT, if you run into a blank screen, it would be HDCP that would be causing it. The HDfury 1 is $99 at hdfury.com and that would do what you need here and not have to worry about HDCP.

That would be my only worry here, as people have said they are using HDCP on games...

We use it to play xbox outside on the house on weekends during the summer...lots of fun! (The lines are from the siding...after about 5 mins of playing, your eyes/brain don't see them anymore.)
