Promblem With Text Messages

I've had this phone, NOKIA Lumia 521 for about 6 months. It was working perfectly fine up until a month ago. I started having common problems with how my messages work which were later on solved. Well, recently, my messages started messing up with one very important person to me. They have an iPhone, and they get my text messages, but I don't get the one's the send me. (Occasionally, I get theirs but the messages are really short. Example: "?") I looked online for answers and found out that they could turn off their iMessages and make it normal text messages, but they always have that turned off. I also found out that you can do other things to help like erasing the thread, which I did in the beginning, but didn't help at all. Now, all I'm asking is for some advice on what to do.

I'm guessing you can't receive MMS messages. Since you are using a Lumia 521, I'm guessing you are on T-Mobile, and I know that a friend of mine on T-Mobile can't receive MMS picture messages from me.

So what to do? I suggest doing one of the following:
1. Investigate if you can receive MMS messages through your carrier and if you'd have to change settings to do so. E.g., with my carrier (Straight Talk), I had to change the MMS APN settings.
2. See if you friend can send you regular SMS messages on the iPhone.
3. Consider switching carriers (probably would require a new phone since I don't think the 521 works with anyone else unless you get it unlocked).
4. Ask your friend to use Facebook Messaging or WhatsApp or Skype for messaging you instead.
