Why won't the mic work on my headset? (Nokia Lumia 635)

I have a brand-new (less than a week old) Nokia Lumia 635 and I just bought a Nokia headset (WH-208) to use with it. The phone detects that I have headphones in, but I can't hear anything when I make calls and the caller can't hear anything on the other end.

Is there some way to set this up to make this work?

the wire piece has a button close to your mouth that probably needs to be switched on. or the headset has a faulty aux connector. the little metal thing with 2 gold lining surrounding it. twist it around.
