How can I get Cortana to work hands free in the car?

Cortana and hands free in car

I have a Lumina Icon phone with 8.1 newly downloaded. I have researched both Google and Windows and the solutions offered to get Cortana to work hands free do not. Does anyone know to fix this.

Cortana becomes a contact when you connect to a car. Then you can use it. Or something.

Sorry, but what do you mean or something. I tried entering Cortana as a contact with 555-555-6789 but then the phone dials the number and my carrier states it cant be connected. I tried re-syncing with my phone and Bluetooth hands free but that did not work either.

My old pioneer unit recognizes using the search button to activate Cortana and it all come through the stereo, technically using the 'voice' button on the stereo activates Cortana but i don't get any audio from her.
