If I switch my connection to metered how will I receive Windows 10 updates? Do I need to

Windows Central Question

I am on a mobile connection with very limited downloads in a rural area of Australia. I want to control the updates/patches with Windows 10 by switching to a metered connection. However if I do this, do I have to turn it off and on to be able to choose when I download updates?
