How can I resume music / podcast from lock screen?

Resume music / podcast from lock screen

Just can't figure this one out. I can easily pause audio playback from the lock screen due to the drop-down panel with controls on it. But how do I resume playback without having to unlock the phone first?

You aren't listing what device or OS you have, and experiences may vary due to these things... So I'll assume you have a generic Lumia Windows Phone, running Windows Phone 8.1.
* Phone is on and my app is open - click pause/resume under the now playing
* Phone is in lock screen, but not suspended - Click volume up/down and a partial screen will appear with 3 buttons Back; pause/resume; Forward
* Phone is suspended - Click power, then volume up/down and a partial screen will appear with 3 buttons Back; pause/resume; Forward
