There never was a 940xl.. The 950s both 950 and 950xl were rumored to be named 940 at first. So the 940xl is the 950xl.

Not the same as such, but they do appear to refer to the same handset. When rumours are released/made up, model numbers are often quoted. Sometimes these are a product of assumption, sometimes they're internal to Microsoft. Whatever the reason, information taken from leaks and rumours shouldn't be regarded as fact until there's an official announcement.
