Surface pro 4 - touch screen freaks out when lid is closed after a while

On my Surface pro 4 the touch screen freaks out when lid is closed after a while. Removing the keyboard and ensuring that nothing is touching the screen seems to make it stop.

My issue, is that I frequently use my Surface with a monitor/keyboard/mouse.

Simply press windows key + p and select the 'second screen only' option. Even if you have multiple monitors (I have 3), it will disable just the Surface screen. Hope that helps.
