How Do You Connect Surface Book with a 2009 iMac as a second monitor?

I have a old 2009 iMac and wanted to use it as a second display monitor with my Surface Book.

I purchase a mini displayport to mini displayport cable and connect to both and nothing happens. Any suggestions?

Did you set the Surface Book graphics options to output to a second screen? Is the second screen picked up under Settings > System > Display on the Surface Book?
