Surface pro 4 pen random failure

My surface pro 4 pen fails to respond randomly. I have had my surface for a year and I have encountered this problem recently. I don't know whether it is a software bug or hardware. Has anybody faced similar problem?

Battery might be running low. I think the battery is supposed to last about a year. The pen software should tell you though, so check there.

To replace the battery, unscrew the pen and replace the AAAA battery.

Note that there are 2 coin cells hidden in the top part (the "eraser" button) but those only supply power to that one button. You don't need to replace those (unless that button stops working). The main AAAA battery powers the actual pen tip and the two buttons near the tip.
