Best camera settings for nightclub / wedding type setting?

Last night I took some really terrible pictures at a wedding. The rubbish ones were not using the flash. Am I setting this wrong? I tried all the exposure settings and it simply went from too dark to too blurry. I left the ISO and scene settings on Auto though. As you can see they're all purple as well. Is there any way to take photos like these without the flash? They manage it in the TV adverts!
