do I need to backup data when I upgrade win7 to win10?

Last month my computer prompted a message saying that I can upgrade windows 7 to windows 10 for free when window 10 is available.
I don't know whether the upgrade requires system reinstallation which will erase all data of system partition?

If you've updated any phone devices (android, iOS or windows phone), it's the same seamless process.

No, it won't erase all of your data. Yes, you need a backup. You always need a backup of your data if you do anything on your computer. Be that updating it or simply using it on a day to day basis. If your data is even a teeny tiny bit important you need a backup. Period.
