How do I get my laptop past a blank black screen?

I have a strange problem on a laptop--stuck on black screen

I have a friend's laptop. It's an old DELL INSPIRON N5050. At her request, i installed Windows 8 But when I turn it on it start just fine and after the windows logo it gets stuck on a blank black screen. I noted if i turn the monitor off then back on it fixes the problem but i dont want to do it everytime. Any idwas?

wait longer. I've seen this happen before and have had to wait for minutes. it eventually powers through. Not sure what causes it, though. probably a driver thing.
