Hi well my Xbox One arrived today and I'm loving it.
Can anyone though point me to a resource or a book that can educate someone for whom this is their first gaming console.
All the guides i can find detail all the great features of the Xbox One but assume prior gaming knowledge.
Just to give you an example, I've been playing Forza 5, and when i started the first lap, it helpfully instructed that the right trigger was the accelerator, great i thought that must be the right hand twiddly knob......except it wasn't that only changed my angle of view......so all the other cars sped off and i sat there trying to work out how to make the car go!

By pure accident i squeezed the button under the back of the controller and i was then off, low and behold that's what the trigger is!! Lol

So I'm not thick, I'm not old and senile i just haven't gamed before, I'm loving what I'm finding but could do with a crash course in the basics if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Cheers

Also, many games have several default button layouts to choose from or you can customize the buttons yourself. If you go into the game menu it will often show you the current layout and let you select different ones.

Well, I have to say you're a LITTLE thick, if you thought a button/bumper was a trigger. The triggers are called triggers because they are shaped like triggers, haha. The basics are that the right trigger is for acceleration in racers and shooting in shooters, while the left trigger is for braking in racers and aiming down the sight in mainstream shooters (Halo being the exception, where the left trigger is for grenades and clicking the right stick is for the sight).

I guess we need some specific questions as to what you're having to figure out to help beyond that.

Forza 5 doesn't really make it easy to understand if you're new to the franchise.

From the main screen, go to "My Profile", and then "Controller". From there you'll be able to see what all the buttons do, and change the layout if it doesn't suit you.

You'll learn that many games have the same basic controls. For racing games, the triggers are your brake and accelerator, for shooting games, they're usually aim and fire.

If you hunt around the menus in the game, you'll generally find the control layout somewhere.
