Whatsapp stuck at creating favourites page

I reinstalled Whatsapp on my Nokia Lumia 720 and after that it is stuck on "creating favs". I sometimes do get messages which drop down from the top. However, I'm unable to see my contacts or active conversations. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling numerous times, but the problem still persists.
I have been using Whatsapp on my phone since 2012, and have had issues with notifications but this is completely new and troublesome..

I had the same problem with Lumia 720. Here is what I tried and it worked for me. Hold the back arrow key for a couple of seconds. This displays all the running apps with the 'x' icon (close app) in the top right corner. Tap on the 'x' to close the app and re-launch it. Try this step a few times if it does not work the first time.
