Why can't I open downloaded attachments in Windows 8.1?

Cant open downloaded attachments in Windows 8.1

I have a Lumia 930 with the Denim update. I have a google account/icloud account and work account attached to the mail app. Whenever i try and download an email attachment such as a PDF / Doc file it completes the download but when I click on the icon to open it, it states "We couldn't open the document because there was a problem".

When I try and open the same email and attachment on my laptop/ipad/web browser the attachment downloads and works fine. Obviously this is preventing me from using the phone as my direct work source. Any ideas ?

Do you have a PDF reader installed on the phone?

What is the extension for the doc file?

Yes. PDF reader is installed. The doc file extension is .doc , its not docx etc.. I have noticed also the file size shown prior to download is not the same post download.
