Why am I unable to receive e-mails but can send them?

unable to receive e-mails but can send them

When I go into email +accounts under talktalk it says 'not up to date' then click on that and it comes up with talktalk error code 80048830

I sometimes had this with BT email, the old faithful switch off and on fixed it.
