Why doesn't my keyboard work in portrait on my surface 4

I read in bed with laptop sideways. When I turn the surface sideways the keyboard and track pad stop working. Using touch screen isn't preferred.

Any way I can 'override' this?

Try manually rotating your screen?

The ctrl alt arrow key shortcut doesn't appear to be working on Surface devices. But you can put your PC in portrait mode. The keyboard will keep working. Is this what you want?
