One a laptop and one a desktop... both were working totally fine until I attempted the free Windows 10 upgrade. Is there any way to recover my harddrives?

Please define the word Dead. Do you rebooted them? Are you on wifi or lan netowrk?

what exactly happened to them when you tried the upgrade? Can you describe the process?

You can probably remove the hard drives and use them as an external storage so you can recover the data
