Do you need a windows licens to use technical preview

[Windows Central Question]

Hey, I have been running windows 10 technical preview in a virtual machine for over two month's now. I haven't activated windows but it still hasn't complaint that it isn't activated. Is this a meant feature that if you are running the technical preview you get windows 10 for free?

I'm not sure about the virtual machine but you do need it for a general pc

this was what I found: You do not need to Activate Windows 10 to install it, but this is how you can activate later | Windows Central
