my surface book not going to sleep and I have windows 10

when I try to turn on sleep mode for my new surface book my screen does not go dark. I have another monitor running with it (a Samsung Ue590) and that remains on as well.

check in settings for when the display is set to switch off and when the devices are set to go to sleep
