How to switch between Windows Insider rings/ channels?

I am on fast ring (dev channel) ring right now (19645). Is there any way to move to slow ring (beta channel) without doing a fresh Windows install? I already changed the Windows Insider setting but I guess it's not as simple as that.

Or is it now: once dev channel, it's always dev channel?

Unfortunately you will have to do a fresh Windows install.

I'd assume that you can wait until the beta channel's version is higher than the dev channel's.

That's correct. MS sure don't make being an Insider easy.
