Whether or not the M8 will get Windows 10 Mobile is up to HTC and their partnership with Microsoft.
The 4 UltraPixel camera (4 megapixels set at two microns) on the HTC takes some great low light shots, and the Duo Camera is a neat gimmick, but you can't beat Lumia Camera 5.0, OIS, 20 MP, and PureView on the Lumia 1520.
Plus the M8's camera suffers from dreadful purple chroma issues and noise. Also, not a whole lot of detail.

1520is hands down the better of the two. Likely to be far better supported, Lumia apps, and the camera on the m8 is awful compared to the 1520.

Even in 2015, the 1520 is considered the king of windows phone..i suppose the only reason why someone would want an HTC is due to the fact they dislike Lumia. But HTC doesn't do well with major software updates. See their whole debacle with windows phone 8.1

1520 you likely should.have little doubt about.

I have a htc one m8 (android) and don't have any issues with the camera anymore, such as the purple picture issues it had, although the pictures can be quite grainy if that makes sense when I compare the same shot to ny Lumia 930. I suppose if the camera is the most important thing for you then I guess the 1520 is the better option, but if I had to pick between the Lumia 1520 and the HTC one m8 (windows) I would go for the m8 simply due to size.

IIRC HTC has said 10 would be making its way to the M8, but then again we have the carriers in the way.

Unbranded phones all the way yo.

HTC also said that about their 8x/8s lime and waffled on that quite a bit ;)

Besides there are no unbranded m8 windows phones. Since they are only us only.

now unbranded 1520 of course is the way to go.

If you can find an unbranded Lumia 1520.
If you're wanting to get a phone new you might only be able to find the M8. The 1520's are quickly vanishing, unfortunately, and it's always becoming more difficult to find one in good shape.

Well, to their credit they did say that 8.1 Update 1 was the last supported thing for the 8S (albeit via Preview for Devs) although yea, its less clear for the 8X. the fact the M8 doesn't sound to popular makes me worry about its update prospects, but then again Samsung put 8.1 Update 1 on their ATIV SE and VZW actually pushed that update so...

Surprisingly I trust Samsung better than HTC. They always seem to push their update for their phones it seems. I still wouldn't choose one over a Lumia of course. But they do seem to be the more reliable of the two compared to htc. I seemed to remember several HTC phones also suffered with not being updated in the wp7 era

The 1520 is a large phone where as the m8 is a smaller phone. If you wanted to go for a smaller phone (5 inch) I would recommend a Lumia 930.
