Windows is still valuable for consumers who are gamers. However, stores are not needed for gamers because games and Windows aren't available as physical media, and Microsoft doesn't sell any hardware that gamers use.

In terms of R&D, one could ask both Apple and Microsoft, "What have you done for me lately?" There isn't much in the way of new products. It's not like Novo Nordisk or Johnson & Johnson.

Likewise, Apple is a mature company. It and Microsoft are the safe bets for investors. They're not bleeding edge innovators any longer. They're as boring yet as valuable as Walmart.
