Here are photos taken with a Lumia 640 XL during a trip to the Yucatan Peninsula. I used Rich Capture for all these. Been enjoying the 640 XL so much that I have not been tempted by the new 950 XL... yet!

There are many more photos on my personal blog (felixwong.com). Basically all posts written since August 2015 have pics taken with the Lumia 640 XL.

This photo was taken with 640xl. ISO 100 and shutter speed was 4 Sec. Light source: a torch and a little candle.

Here are some sample shots from Germany. They are all taken in auto mode and not edited.

The first 2 shots were taken in sunny weather and all photos from this day were really good. It was cloudy when the last 3 were taken and they didn't turn out great. But still this is expected.

Wernigerode, beautiful town. I remember my first bike tour on Kopfsteinpflaster right after the wall came down. We started in Clausthal and biked around the entire Harz Mountains.
    cool pictures. Cheers

Really beautiful town indeed. I really liked the "Schloss" and actually I wanted to add 2 more pictures from its inner yard, but the wp forum didn't accept them for some reason. :(

Took the first picture in a cfl light, then turned on the other lights in the room(its sufficient) because my htc one captures good enough images even with lower lighting, at least without the grainy stuff. However after reading the settings for the iso and shutter lag now I can see some improvement in the quality, but still not good enough. The pictures.are dull as well, overall really disappointed. The phone screen itself appears to be dull, it lacks that shine as it should be with a gorilla glass 3. Even my mom's older Lumia 720 has a more live and vibrant screen.
Gorilla Glass doesn't add "shine" to display, it's there just for protection. For difference in vibrance between 720 and 640xl, 720 has AMOLED screen and that's why it has more vibrance to it. but 640 XL has ISP and should produce more accurate and close to nature colours.
    For pictures, please post samples.

    Hi Everyone,

I have a Lumia 640 XL and i am facing an issue with the video mode capturing less light as compared to the still mode. What I mean is that the scene as we view on the screen in video mode has significantly less light as compared to the scene in the still mode. This happens indoors when the light is not 100% adequate. This results in darker videos indoors as compared to still shots.

I have a thread here discussing the problem with example shots of how the screen appears in video and still mode under different light conditions. However, I have not been able to reach a conclusion weather my phone has a camera hardware problem or if its the software that needs to be tuned. I was on WP8.1 earlier, then updated the phone to W10M day before yesterday, hoping that the issue might get resolved in the new windows camera app but the problem persists.

Raspberry and Beetle were taken with evershop macro 12.5x. The evershop clip for the lens was NOT long enough (for our phones), so I had to customize the back a bit.

From my garden. These flowers are HEAVENLY in the flesh, the colours fluoresce, they are ALIVE with colour! I had to amp up the saturation on my PC, as the image looked washed out as compared to my 640XL screen, ah well, enjoy!

I am done with post processing of Windows Camera in Windows 10 Mobile.
So I started capturing in DNG and doing the post processing myself.
Turns out it is lot better than heavily compressed jpeg.

If you have good lighting, go ahead and capture in DNG and do post processing yourself.

DNG files are approximately 18MB in size.

Low light / night shots are a bit tough due to noise. Noise can be removed to an extent without losing detail in opensource softwares.

    Open source software I use.

In April 2017, I am still using a Lumia 640 XL as a daily driver. One reason is its camera: it still is outperforming brand new $200 Android phones, especially in low light. For example, I have a 2016 Moto G4 which was lauded as having "the best camera in its class," and while its daylight photos are about as good as the Lumia 640 XL's, the low light photos are many degrees worse, even when using manual mode.

    Below are some examples:

    Lumia 640 XL (auto mode):

    Moto G4 (auto mode):

Note how grainy the G4's photo is. The photo is totally unusable. And this was the best photo of several I tried taking with the G4 at that particular instant!

Here are samples from both cameras in manual mode. One trick I often do in low light is to force the ISO down to 400 or so to reduce the noise, and keep the shutter open longer to capture more light. Of course, this requires both a steady hand (or tripod) and subject so there is no motion blur, but this trick often allows for usable photos in cases where there is not enough light.

Here's what the Lumia 640 XL was able to produce with only a dim bedside light on (ISO 200, .312 sec exposure):

    Moto G4 (ISO 200, .5 sec):

Observe that even at ISO 200, the G4's photo came out noticeably grainier, and even with the longer exposure time (.5 seconds instead of .312), the photo came out darker. I would say the photo is useable, but barely, whereas the 640 XL's was surprisingly acceptable.

They both have 13 MP rear cameras with an aperture of 2.0, but the Lumia's low-light processing seems to be considerably better.
