According to this article, it seems very possible that Facebook COULD sink Skype if they allow free international VOIP calling.
Facebook could sink Skype with video call app update (Wired UK)

How about the other way around, Skype being used in the back end in facebook?

Well, I dunno if Facebook can abuse the user's internet connection from the browser similarly as Skype does. The reason why Skype is free cos it uses your internet for it instead of their own bandwidth :D

Or just do free video call without turning on the cam.

A lot of Skype users are business pros that may not have a Lync type of system in place. I don't see a meeting happening over Facebook Chat anytime soon regardless of VOIP/Cam support.

I'm sure if it ever came down to that skype has a few patent's since they were the first to really do the calling thing via the internet and they could flex their muscles a little. Everyone is afraid of a little patent war because then they can't use that kind of technology at all until they work on making their own and that takes too long. Lol
