Today microsoft released its much awaited surface pro 4 in india. But the price certainly came as an unpleasant surprise. A whopping sum of Rs 89990 (US $1352) and that's without the keyboard. Keyboard is gonna cost Rs 12500 (US$188) extra. I understand the logistics of transport and distribution and taxation from Indian government must have contributed to it a bit. But even then this is still US $ 352 more than the price in USA per tablet. But the difference between the US and India prices of Apple products is significantly lower.

May be i am looking at it from the wrong perspective. Surfacepro 4 is a macbook and an ipad pro combined with a single OS. So may be I should compare it with the combined cost of an ipad pro and a macbook in India or for that matter even US costs of an ipad pro and a macbook combined. Then even the indian prices for the surface line will seem fair. Most people i know who own a mac also own an ipad.

But then what's to stop me from just asking a US based friend to get me a lenovo thinkpad - the shiny new one which comes with an international warranty?

So my dear desis and pardesis, will you still buy a surface pro in India? (Of course this discussion is meant for people who want the pen functionality, there are are hundreds of cheap windows laptops available in india without the pen).

I think most high end laptops have this price difference. I remember comparing a Dell model. For the same specs there was a $200-250 difference.

A lot of companies raise their prices a bit too much when taking it to foreign markets.... it sucks. It's not like MS is building their devices in the USA and has to export them... They're all coming from the same place. They're just jacking up the price because they can.... Products from China to Europe now pay A LOT less import taxes thanks to that China-Spain rail line... Lowering taxes and import costs A LOT... yet, prices are always higher than in the US.

I am thinking about asking a friend to get it from USA. I have heard if you have microsoft international warranty, indians will honour it.

You are right. But apple is keeping the price difference lower. Microsoft should take a hint from apple. Buying an sp4 here is just as expensive as buying a surfacebook in USA. China is just beside india - infact it's the same bloody sea.

It is a weird decision Microsoft marketing is making. Although I do know the production of Surfaces are not as numerous as the iPads in circulation, the original price itself, in the US in my opinion is also overpriced.

Sure it's a laptop & a tablet all in one, but the way I see it, it is still in infancy since Windows 10 UI for touch isn't yet polished & Microsoft Store's effort on making great productivity apps from other platforms are not great (which is a big of importance to any tablet).

It is surprising they gave away Windows 10 for free as an upgrade, but don't consider an affordable price for their devices (and as in case, other countries outside of the USA are suffering least +300-500$ to whatever Surface of picking). I guess for the prices, it is considered high because of new technology such as SSD & high resolution screens, etc. But, imo, from specs & form-factor, the surface isn't yet the best "bang for the buck" and for the inflated prices it sure will scare potential microsoft customers off.

Some examples, like the "considered" slow Read/Write SSD (Samsung PM951), the fact that the processor is dual core which maybe not powerful enough for a laptop factor, and above all with the steep price people will wonder if the current gen Surface is worthy of purchase/should they wait for the better.

Since it's a full laptop i don't think i would worry about the lack of applications. As i will be mostly using office and onenote and may be adobe acrobat which work best with windows. But if the prices are too high like this then it will not matter as i will not be owning the microsoft device to begin with.

No matter how you look at it, the price of the surface pro 4 considering what it is not or the fact that it is not the reliable device that MS said it is, is way too high. I returned all the surface pro 4s I bought except one.

Windows Central in this article: Surface Pro 3 and Surface Pro 4 make their debut in India; prices start at ?73,990 | Windows Central
mentioned "Interestingly, Microsoft India would also acknowledge warranty on Surface devices brought abroad, although under local warranty policy."

I would suggest you to register your Surface Pro 4 here: microsoft.com/surface/en-in/support/register

Then claim warranty if eligible.

How much did it cost you (total cost including customs) and which variant did you purchase?
