Surface 4 Dock - Will It Work With Other Laptops

I am thinking of getting the Surface 4 dock. From what I understand, I just need to attach the magnetic connector from the dock to the tablet and its good to go. That connector alone will take care of the charging while providing two monitor support plus 4 USB ports and the LAN port. I also have a Dell laptop with USB 3 ports. I know Dell has a laptop dock which when connected to the USB 3 port in laptop will provide extra monitor plus USB port support. Can I have similar functionality with the Surface 4 dock - by attaching one of its USB 3 ports to my laptop's USB 3 port?

That won't work. The Surface Pro dock is designed just for the Pro 3, Pro 4, and Surface Book. It handles all data through the Surface's dock/charge connector. It is not a USB device like the Dell one is.

What's the port on the MS Surface Pro 4 called? Do I get a USB adapter to that port so I can use that end on a regular laptop?

It's called SurfaceLink and no, there are no USB adapters as it is a proprietary connector.
