How Much Zoom Does the Nokia 1020 Really Have?

Let me preface this by saying that I don't know as much about photo optics as I should. I'm just trying to puzzle this out. I welcome any alternate views/corrections, etc, as I am here to learn.

Nokia advertises that the Lumia 1020 is "Zoom Reinvented." The photos accompanying the ads are certainly eye-popping. I think they tend to make one think this is a way to get a super zoom without all that glass. This lead me to wonder how the 1020's "zoom" compares to my Nokia 521 and to a regular camera. I know a pixel isn't always a good measurement, since the 1020's lens will create a more defined image, but here I only want to concentrate on zoom.

The Nokia 521 will take a picture with a 2592x1936 pixel resolution. The 1020 will take a 7712x4352 pixel shot at full resolution. Since they both have about the same focal length lens, they will both put down the same size image on the imaging sensor at a given distance away from the object. Since the 1020's image has about 3 times as many pixels in a given direction, I can crop the image from the 1020 to make it about 3 times as big as a 521 image with the same resolution. Thus, the 1020 has about a 3X zoom, compared to the 521.

Am I off-base here? Flame suit on.
