Nokia Lumia 521 screen goes blank when making a call. Any idea on why and how to fix?

As soon as I make a call, the screen goes blank, so I can't see to end the call or anything else. This is a new problem...just started yesterday. Have installed updates and rebooted phone, but nothing has helped so far.

Sounds like a proximity sensor issue. Have you cleaned that area? Any screen protector covering it?
