where do you enter that code out if it is locked on an account

Can you clarify this question just a little? From the dialer, you dial ##7820# to see if it's locked. If you have an unlock code, you then enter it there, hit the check mark, and it will be unlocked.

When you say locked to an account - does that mean it is locked to someone else's account? The unlock code allows you to use it with other carriers (or the current carrier), but if someone else still owes money to the carrier, the carrier will not give you the unlock code.

Unlocked phones means you don't have to wait for the carriers to infect the OS, and you don't have to wait for updates...they come straight from Microsoft.

Absolutely, 100% incorrect, if unlocked from a carrier. My Rogers unlocked phone, running on TELUS, still has to get updates from Rogers.

That is the difference between factory unlocked and carrier unlocked. Factory is just that - it is not connected to any carrier when you buy it, and updates come from the manufacturer.

Carrier unlocked means you've completed your contract, so they will allow you to use the phone on other networks. However, updates are still tied to the original carrier, even though you may be using it somewhere else.
