4:3 or 16:9? What do you use on your 930?

Hey, just I quick poll:

What setting do you use in your camera app? 16:9 or 4:3?

I personally prefer the 4:3 since it has a higher pixel count and it's more "classic"..

and you?

Not a 930 user, (920) but I use 4:3. I prefer to have the most pixels and crop it to 16:9 if the situation calls for it.

I also set my family (920, 1520) and friends' (1020, 930) phones to 4:3 and show them how to change it if they don't like it. Photos I see them post on social networks are in 4:3, so I guess they like it like that too.

16:3 is better if you want wide-angle photos. I own a Lumia 1020 and set the resolution to 4:3 to have more MPs. But I later came to know that in 4:3, the photos are not that wide-angle as in 16:3. Where 16:3 crops the top and bottom of the image from the sensor, 4:3 crops from the left and right of the sensor. I now choose the resolution based on my need. If I want wide-screen, I go for 16:3. Otherwise, 4:3. Keeping 4:3 always is not a good idea.

4:3 have more sharper pictures (specially close subjects) and have more coverage area too. In 16:9 we lost a lot of top and bottom area to gain just a little of side areas.

16:9 is good for landscape pictures only.

4:3

Actually I just checked when I read this and it was 16:9 (I haven't taken many photos yet).
Prefer the classic size.

Since most sensors are closer to 4:3 you get more megapixels, I don't have a Lumia 930 but on my Nexus 5 4:3 enables 8 MP and 16:9 drops quality to 6 MP.

Other than that 4:3 is the better resolution for printing as well. 16:9 is just good for video capture.

16:9

I don't like 4:3 it's an old format and does not look good on todays screen. The new standard is wide and 4:3 just looks bad on those displays. I rather fill the whole screen with the photo.

It strictly depends on the scene you are trying to shoot, or the effect you are trying to achieve.

Portraits for example, work better in 4:3, landscapes look more impressive in 16:9

Remember, with those Nokia phones you are not just cropping the same image different ways, you are in fact using the sensor in different aspect ratios.

Can't you convert landscapes you took in 4:3 to 16:9 later?

Haha and all of us here are arguing which is better because we have an option to switch between both, iPhone users are stuck with 4:3 always. :p

Yes, you can crop the top and bottom of your 4:3 photo to make it 16:9, but it would not be as 'widescreen' as a native 16:9 photo from the camera.
E.g. I was in Dubai a few months ago and was trying to take a 4:3 portrait photo of Burj Khalifa from the Dubai Fountain (i.e, a few hundred feet from the base of the Burj). I could not capture its full height even when I placed my Lumia on the pavement to capture. Then I switched to 16:9 and could capture the whole Burj in one portrait photo from my normal height (without any bending the knees or kneeling or anything--like many people even with DSLR's were doing)

I tried out with my Nexus 5, in 8 MP 4:3 and 6 MP 16:9, I seriously see the same amount of height and width so I am going to stick with 4:3 for now. :)
